\n<\/p>\nThursday night, Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. performed its first ever U.S. solo show in the Hub for 800 students. Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, the two women of t.A.T.u., sat down with the Daily Nexus for an interview following their concert.<\/p>\n
Daily Nexus: Tonight was your first solo, headlining show in the United States. How did it go?
\nYulia Volkova: Before the concert, we were just so nervous. We were just jumping around!
\nLena Katina: When we get on the stage, we feel this energy, and we want to give back that energy.<\/p>\n
What can we expect from t.A.T.u. in the future?
\nLena: Our movie [\u201cFinding t.A.T.u.\u201d] is coming up and we\u2019re planning to do a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Our album, we recorded the Russian version, and it\u2019s coming out in April. The English version will be little bit later and we\u2019re working on it right now. We just did a new video and it will come out soon also.<\/p>\n
What song \u2013 or can you not say yet?
\nLena: (She laughs.) It\u2019s a secret.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s your favorite song to perform live?
\nLena: All of our songs are favorites [to perform], because we\u2019re singing about our feelings, our problems. Every song is part of us. I would say that. There\u2019s no favorites.
\nYulia: Sorry for my English, it\u2019s just\u2026 I understand, I just don\u2019t speak very well. I understand though!<\/p>\n
Do you have a future U.S. tour planned, or is this all you have for now?
\nLena: For now, that\u2019s all. But maybe, maybe we\u2019ll have a show\u2026
\nYulia: When we come back to Russia, we have lots of shows around Russia\u2026 Italy too, Germany too. Maybe June we\u2019ll come back around [to the] Bay Area [to do a show].
\nLena: Yes, something around San Francisco. Also to do a new video there. So, that\u2019s the plan for now.<\/p>\n
What did you think of the UCSB crowd and the atmosphere here?
\nYulia: I today came first time and looked around and said, \u201cOh my God, people live here? It\u2019s so beautiful!\u201d
\nLena: Yes, the territory is amazing.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s the inspiration for your lyrics?
\nLena: Our souls. Just problems that are bothering us, just what we\u2019re thinking about. We\u2019re singing about what we\u2019re thinking about. And we don\u2019t want to just sing, \u201cOh you love me, I don\u2019t love you\u201d or \u201cOh, I love you, you don\u2019t love me\u201d and so forth. All that stuff, it\u2019s not for us. There\u2019s lots of problems that others don\u2019t want to sing about because it\u2019s not really beautiful. \u2026 Our coming out album called Waste Management, I think you\u2019ll get the idea when you listen to the whole album.<\/p>\n
How would you describe your album? What topics does it cover?
\nLena: It\u2019s when people are not managing all that bad stuff. \u2026 Sorry, it\u2019s hard to describe. I don\u2019t know how to say it in English. (Katina and Volkova have a brief discussion in Russian.) All the stuff people are doing that are not good, it\u2019s waste and we have to manage it. Nobody\u2019s managing it\u2026 Well, some people are trying. So, somebody is trying and somebody\u2019s not trying to manage it. Like \u201cBeliy Plashik,\u201d it\u2019s our new song. Did you see the video? It\u2019s against abortions and against when someone kills another, or when somebody hurts another\u2026 it\u2019s against that, and against abortion. [But the album is] not only [about] one topic, it\u2019s [about] all kinds of stuff.<\/p>\n
Could you tell me a little about your upcoming movie, \u201cFinding t.A.T.u.\u201d?
\nYulia: Our friends wrote the book in Russia, we play ourselves, t.A.T.u.
\nLena: Yes, we\u2019re playing ourselves.
\nYulia: It\u2019s a story about two girls, two fans [played by Mischa Barton and Shantel VanSanten] who meet at our concert. They come to Russia, see each other, love each other\u2026
\nLena: It\u2019s about drugs and about love.
