Biography
t.A.T.u. are known for going past the premise and pushing the boundaries, from their debut English single and video “All the Things She Said”, featuring the two in school girl uniforms embracing each other, to their comeback “All About Us”, tackling a serious issue of sexual assault of young girls – in which Julia plays a victim. But not only do these girls shock the masses with their honest reality, they stand up for what they believe in, “Our slogan is to love and it's not important whom to love. We want to say that a boy can love a boy and a girl can love a girl.” says Julia, 23, the brunette of the group.
The girls were discovered by Ivan Shapovalov, their former producer (though due to musical differences, was later fired in 2004 on the set of the girls reality show “Podnebesnaya.”), through an all-girls casting call for a new Russian group in late 1999. It’s been said that the girls went alone, and didn’t know the other were there. And when Lena was chosen first for the group, and saw Yulia was chosen later, they were immediately happy to see each other – due to being good friends from the Russian children’s group, “Neposedy”, they participated in together around the ages of 13 and 12.
The nature of the girls relationship from “Neposedy”, to their debut album’s success “200 KM/H in the Wrong Lane”, to the present – has been misinterpreted from the start. Lena, 23, the redhead of the group says, “Lesbian image does not disturb us, because we are not lesbians. Yes, we love each other, but I repeat, we are not lesbians. We just show love between two girls, without vulgarities. Our behaviour has been misinterpreted. I have never had a girlfriend and I have never been in a relationship with Yulia.” Lena and Yulia both deny ever having a lesbian relationship as the media once proclaimed.
t.A.T.u. are now working on their 3rd studio album, titled “Waste Management” and in Russian – “Upravlenie Otbrosami”, with their team of producers, and their long-time band mates, Troy Maccubbin and Sven Martin. Already a few songs have been confirmed, “You And I”, “Little People”, and “Ne Zhaley”, which were heard at the B1 Maximum Club and MK Festival earlier this year. t.A.T.u. are also being shown in a new movie, “Finding t.A.T.u.”, about two teenage girls, Lana and Janie, who meet a t.A.T.u. concert and fall in love, but soon find themselves in a dangerous lifestyle with drugs, partying, and a shocking murder.
What can we expect of the future of t.A.T.u., knowing their history of around 8 years, from “All the Things She Said” “Not Gonna Get Us” “All About Us” to “You And I”, “Waste Management” and “Finding t.A.T.u.”? – Everything! These girls never fail to shock and satisfy us. From 200 KM/H in the Wrong Lane, to Dangerous and Moving, it’s always full speed ahead for t.A.T.u.
